Meh. [08 Jan 2009|12:54am]
I wonder how many posts over the years I've titled 'meh'.

Today has been a long, trying day.

Last night I housesat for Megan's parents, which I was happy to do, though it was pretty inconvenient. It just so happened that they needed me to do it on a night that I had late class, and then the morning after, I had early class. And it's a half-hour commute from my house to theirs, and a half-hour commute from my house to school.

To top it off, my anxiety has been creeping back in, and I think that I JUST realized why. I weigh about 200 lbs. now. When I was originally prescribed the Lexapro, I weighed about 180 lbs. I don't know this for certain, but I believe that your weight plays a role in your prescriptions for Lexapro, which would mean that since I've gained weight, I'm getting less of the drug than I was before, per pound. I plan to call the doctor tomorrow and ask about that.

Meanwhile, the place where I got my tetanus booster is still sore three days later, so I'll ask about that, too.

So anyway, basically I've just been running around doing things all day today, and I didn't sleep very well last night, so I'm pretty wiped now.

When I got home from school (at about 7:15 pm), I made myself some dinner and vegged in front of the TV for an hour or so. Then I spent the rest of the night writing more of my steampunk story, and actually successfully reached the first steampunk section! Hooray! I'm hoping that the payoff in chapter five that I've been building toward for the first four chapters is a satisfying payoff for the reader, despite its inherently unsatisfying nature as the beginning of the real conflict of the story. Despite having written chapters four and five, I'm not going to post them until I've had at least a little feedback on chapters two and three. I will, however, continue to write in the meantime. I have absolutely no idea how long this will end up being, but I do pretty much know where it's going, just not all the steps along the road of getting there.

It's nice to be writing again. I haven't seriously written anything in quite a long time, and I think it's just because I've been too busy. Having a fiancee can be distracting, to say the least, and I find that I'm not as inspired to write when I have company pretty much all the time. In that sense, it will be good that I have such a long break in-between classes this semester, because it will force me to be alone on campus every other day, and I can do some writing there.

Anyway, I think it's time to go lie in bed and play Chrono Trigger on my DS until I fall asleep.

Oh god, that was awful [08 Jan 2009|12:59pm]
Last night was pretty terrible. I had an absolutely awful time sleeping.

I had a really hard time falling asleep. My body was really... tight. I was so tense that I was kind of twitchy, which I never am. I couldn't fall asleep because I couldn't relax. I couldn't relax because I kept thinking about things that set me on edge. I was trying to think of things that were peaceful or relaxing, but I just couldn't think of any. My mind was drawn back to stressful and/or terrible things time and time again.

Eventually I fell asleep, but woke up for no discernable reason at 6 am and had to repeat the entire process again.

It was just an awful experience, and I wonder if it's tied to my recent upsurge in anxiety in some way. Hrm.

Let's hope that today is better.

Steampunk story [08 Jan 2009|04:52pm]
Alright, having received feedback on chapters two and three (everyone thank [info]zanthia494), I'm going to go ahead and post chapter four.

I've actually written up to chapter six so far, but I don't want to post five without six, because people may hate me, and I'm not ready to post six quite yet. I may wait a day, since I'm not entirely satisfied with it, yet.

However, I thought I would go ahead and post chapter four. Once again, your thoughts are absolutely welcome and encouraged, even if it's a simple comment saying, 'I like it' or 'I don't like it'.

Chapter One: In Which Mr. Jonathan Darby is Given a Strange Assignment.
Chapter Two: Our Unlikely Hero Boards a Train And Learns of His Role in Things to Come.
Chapter Three: Personal Revelations are Exchanged on Board a Train.
Chapter Four: The Tale of the Mysterious Flying Man )

Okay, I'll do it. [08 Jan 2009|10:20pm]
These are the two most recent chapters in my steampunk story, bringing you, the reader, up to date for as far as I've written. Not too bad, considering that I started two days ago.

These two chapters were definitely the hardest to write, and I don't know that I'm entirely satisfied with the way they turned out, but I'm very interested in hearing your feedback on the subject. Chapter five is also the first chapter in which we see a small bit of the steampunk in this story. A very small bit, but that was always how H.G. Wells' stories began, too. The Invisible Man, for instance, begins in a wholly different place than it ends. And yes, I intend to keep everyone guessing as far as what the rest of the story has in store, though I've given a few very small bits of foreshadowing throughout the chapters I've already posted. Really, they'd likely only be noticeable on a second reading.

I'll admit that I ended chapter six on what could be taking as an amusing note... You'll have to let me know how that works for you. I wanted to lighten the tone since the preceeding bits were pretty serious.

Anyway, without further ado, I present to you chapters one through six of the temporarily titled work, "Jonathan vs. Nicholas".

Chapter Four: The Tale of the Mysterious Flying Man.
Chapter Five: In Which Several Heinous Acts are Performed )
Chapter Six: Picking Up the Pieces )
